Farewell My Hard Disk...
Okay so maybe the title of this blog is not as poetic as I want it to sound like,
(I was thinking along the lines of "Farewell My Concubine" you see:P), but then again,
it is a little bit hard to attach even a tiny hint of romanticism to something as practical
and, uhm, square as a hard disk isn't it? Although I suppose in this weird but wonderful world of
ours, you will most likely find people who actually CAN so that :P
ANyway I am writing this blog weeks after my computer in JB has gone completely bonkers on me (or
perhaps it is just giving up on totally technically challenged master:P), and now that I am
sure my hard disks (not one but both of them:P) cannot be rescued saved for a few retreiveable
files (which included my thesis thanks to my absolute paranoia that I will do something wrong
which prompted me to save a copy of it in EVERY SINGLE drive I have, I mean, Had :( ), I think
back at all the stuff that I had in my PC's hard disks and sigh...it feels as if a big part
of my university life has been wiped away...
Mind you, this is not the first time this had happened. I lost everything in my PC about two years
ago when it was infected by a virus and my Pc had to be reformatted...gosh the pictures that I lost...
I never really recovered from that:P There was just no time to download everything back again, and the
fact that my connection is slow doesnt help either:P Maybe that's one reason I still prefer your
usual "analog" camera as opposed to a digital camerea:P at least those pictures you can really hold
them and keep them...and do things with them like make a card or two... :)
This time around, yes I have lost pictures...and so much more, sigh :( I lost some pretty good choice songs
copied from CDs and MP3s borrowed from friends here and there, I lost a couple of unfinished blog drafts
on my trips up North and to Melaka (aiyaiyai...seems those blogs are not mean to be?), assignments, and sadly,
all my AIESEC stuff :( (it might seem scary but I do feel a bit sad over its loss:P) All the stuff that I
had done over the past 2 years...as a VP, as a Faci, as a Chair, as an OC...I suppose it's not stuff that
I will actually go and read often, but I always figure that years from now when I go back home and I turn on
that PC of mine I will look through all those stuff and I will remember, all the things that were important to
me back then and how much heart and soul I gave just because I believed that I was doing something important
that actually is making a difference...and now I can't do that anymore...sigh...
I mean, in this time and era when practically everyone has a PC, don't you think you hard disk and its
contents, to a certain extent, reflects you as a person? Even someone's wallpaper gives you a first
impression of what the person is like (maybe its a picture of themself, or an anime character, or a cute
kitten, or a picture of a scenery background, or maybe for the more practical ones, the usual Microsoft XP
green and blue background?:P) Hmmm...now that I think of it, are wallpapers part of a hard disk? I have to
ask Ah Khoon about this (your friendly neighbourhood PC doctor:P) But anyway, my point is,you can
learn so much about someone through their PC only...look through their pictures and see where they
have been, who they hang out with...look through their songs, maybe they are a classical music fan, or
they like Japanese music, or a Phantom of the Opera fan...and look through their recent documents,to know what
they have been busy lately, maybe they're writing a blog like me, or looking through some articles they
downloaded from the internet, or just finished an assignment...It's practically like this huge part of
your life...and mine is gone...sigh...
I'll have to get a new one when I get back of course, but it won't be the same would it?:P The irony of it,
me, perhaps one of the few technically challenged (and technique-ally challenged as well it seems:P) in the
world waxing lyrical on something as unromantic as a hard disk :p...the irony of it :P
